How To Wash Cashmere

Step 1

Check the label.

Before you get started please double check the garment's care label for any special instructions. While the instructions below are consistent for our Tenlea Hunter cashmere styles, other brands may have different brand or style specific instructions.

Step 2

De-Pill

Place your cashmere item on a clean surface, ensuring it’s laid flat, and use a pilling comb to carefully remove all the bobbles. Work in sections, using gentle, even strokes to comb in a single direction until all fuzz and pills are gone.

Step 3

Handwash (Gently)

In a small tub or clean sink, add cool water.  Add a 1-2 capfuls of a gentle laundry detergent made for wool and cashmere.  (SUGGEST BRAND HERE).    Immerse the garment in water and gently swirl it for about one minute. Avoid soaking it for too long, and refrain from rubbing or twisting the fabric, this will prevent pilling.

Step 4

Rinse

Rinse with clean cold water until the water runs clear.

Step 5

Remove excess water

Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing the garment. Lay it flat on a clean, dry towel, roll it up, and press with your hands to remove more moisture.

Step 6

Dry

Reshape the item and lay it flat to dry—please don't hang, hanging it on a line or drying rack may cause it to lose its shape.

Step 7

Wear and enjoy!

Cashmere has natural antimicrobial properties, so you can comfortably wear your favorite pieces up to five times before washing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I wash my cashmere?

Breathable, moisture-wicking, and resistant to odors, our cashmere knits can be worn up to five times before needing a wash. Washing them too often may result in excessive pilling. Simply let the knit air out for at least 24 hours after wearing it before donning it again.

How do I prevent pilling?

Since cashmere is a delicate natural fiber, it can sometimes develop small bumps known as pilling after wear. Pilling typically occurs in areas that experience friction, causing shorter fibers to rise to the surface and form tiny balls. Fortunately, these can be easily removed by using a pilling comb, (insert link to pilling comb) and they will diminish over time with a few gentle hand washes.  Be sure and see our How to De-Pill Guide on how to use our sweater comb.

How should I store my cashmere?

After washing, fold your garments carefully and place them in cotton dust bags. (If you don’t have dust bags, cotton pillowcases are a great alternative. Always fold knits for storage—never hang them—to prevent stretching or misshaping.) Store the dust bags in an airtight bin with either cedar or lavender sachets, as both are natural moth repellents. Lavender will also add a pleasant fragrance.  Some sweater detergents have a natural moth repellant scent as well.
